I adore middle-schoolers: kids between the ages of 9 and 12. After years of mentoring middle and high teachers and writing non-fiction, I'm currently working on a contemporary fantasy series for middle-grade girls. What a challenge! The one thing I know for sure is that you cannot hand this special group of readers watered down young adult fiction or 'watered up' chapter books. Would you like to help me--and yourselves--craft the best middle school fiction we can?

A few of us (well, two) aspiring science fiction/fantasy writers were looking for a serious critique and write-sharing group to join. We thought, hey, lots of people in Berkeley must love sci-fi...we just have to find them and get them in a cafe. The group is open to anyone who is writing in the genre or who enjoys it enough to read other people's writing and provide serious and supportive critique. What kind of writing? Screenplays, novels, short stories, YA...you name it. We share our writing …
This is a group for non-fiction writers or writers creating fiction based on real-life events who want to share their work, receive feedback from one another, and get encouragement to publish. Writers working on essays, memoirs, researched articles/books, etc. are welcome. Meetings will held on Sundays in the early-evening, at 4: 30 p.m., at a Berkeley cafe. Information about our sharing/feedback process can be found at http://www.meetup.com/East-Bay-Non-
Fiction-Writers/about/.
Welcome to our Meetup! The book club is structured around reading and discussing one non-fiction book each month, typically on the second Sunday of the month but rescheduled as needed based on holidays or other special events. Meetups are facilitated by the organizer (or an occasional guest) to provide structure and direction to the discussion. All members are encouraged to provide their opinions, and all opinions are valued and respected. At the end of the meeting members will vote on a list of …
Crime and Punishment, Anna Karenina, A Tale of Two Cities......this group is for anyone who wants to re-visit classics such as these or explore them for the first time. This will be a casual book club and anyone with an interest in classic fiction is welcome! We will vote on our selection each month (except for the first). This group will not be a formal affair with prepared questions, etc. Instead, we will have a free-flowing discussion about the read over food and libations (if you so desire).
You are playing an unusual form of interactive entertainment. A COMPUTER is here, displaying mostly text. In accordance with tradition, the text is written in the SECOND PERSON. There is a group of PEOPLE here, and they are talking about INTERACTIVE FICTION. "Join us!" they call out. "It'll be fun!" > (Also follow us on Twitter and Facebook!)
There are several Meetup book clubs in the East Bay, but many of them are specialized (e.g., women-only, we only read such-and-such books, etc.), or their meetings fill to capacity so fast that I never get a chance to rsvp - so I decided to start this one. I previously participated in a fantastic book club in Chicago, which gave me the opportunity to read some great books that I probably wouldn't have found on my own. I hope to continue that trend here! This is a mixed-gender book club for anyon …
The Writers Cafe is off to a great start. We're been meeting for two and a half months now. The group is currently full, however if you are interested, join up and send me an email. I'll contact you and give you an email address where you can send a writing sample -- either a chapter of your novel or a short story. If what you're doing is in sync with the group I'll put you on the waiting list and let you know where things are at with the group. The current group is excellent. All of the writer …

So what's the worst part of most book groups? Being forced to read a book you simply don't want to read. And what's the best part: getting all those great book recommendations! In this meet up, we're going to dispense with the book *reading* and go straight to the recommending ... and we'll do it with a game I call the "Book Auction". Each participant brings 2 of their favorite books (1 fiction, 1 non-fiction) -- these can be books off your shelf, or new purchases from a store. At the door, ever …
I am a graduate student finishing an MFA in Creative Writing at Goddard College. I love leading groups and being in the company of people who want to explore the world through writing and reading. WHAT Family Matters: Fiction and Memoir Six 21/2 hour sessions helping you mine your family history as well as the histories of others for rich material. Explore creative writin …

Let's be honest: writing is hard, and sometimes scary. Whether you're tackling a novel, a script, a memoir, or a short story, encouragement and positive feedback from other writers not only help you improve your work, but give you an incentive to keep going. You'll also learn a great deal from reading the work of other writers. I've been a writer for forty years, and have worked professionally as a journalist (the Contra Costa Times, and freelance for dozens of other publications), television co …

I couldn't find a group for slash fans in the area, so I started one! If you like the female-friendly fandom spaces of LJ, AO3, DW, tumblr, are excited for Yuletide, etc, please join up! I'm hoping to have some low key cafe and restaurant meetups, as well as movie meetups and tv nights if people are interested. Also of interest: some people have kindly told me about the San Francisco Bay Area Slashers (SFBAS) yahoo group. They have meetings at rotating locations in the Bay Area every other month …
This group is meant to bring together dedicated and serious writers who value voice, advocacy, experience and artistic written expression. The focus of this group is the feminine experience. That doesn't mean the female experience. It can be the experience or exploration of anything deemed feminine, supposedly feminine, not feminine, etc. Writing can focus on struggling with ideas or concepts of femininity. We will write, share our work, participate in readings and create a community of writers …
This is for people interested in writing one chapter of a novel. The overall narrative has been loosely thought out, but how you want to tell your piece of the story is entirely up to you. When we finish, we will have completed a book, and each of us can be proud of having accomplished something big together. If it is any good, the next step could be working together on getting it published! I came up with the idea of shared novel writing (I'm sure I'm not the first!) after thinking for years ab …
06/12 For the next few months, we will be accepting non-reading members only. Those who participate will be given priority once the list reopens. Inviting writers in all genres, published or not, to share work and provide constructive feedback in an informal, supportive environment. Also to share experiences in publishing process and make friends with fellow writers. We meet weekly, on Wednesday evenings from 7.30p-9.30p at Au Coqulait in Berkeley.
This group is actually going to be several groups, all associated or affiliated in some way with The Storytelling Association of California, or SAC. Many local area groups meet for story swaps, storytelling performances and/or storytelling workshops, and this will be the place where they are announced and promoted through Meetup. The calendar for all events can be found at http://www.storysaac.org/calendar.h

Confidence Builders towards Enlightenment: is a multi-disciplinary group that covers a range of diverse interest. The group meets and engages in a challenge each session. The concept of the winner takes all, is a perk. I believe to develop and build confidence the MIND must contiuously be challenged. The participants will brainstorm and develop critical thinking exercises, and we will also have light sessions where we share in our creativity. For the poet in us, we share poetry, creative writing …
About the East Bay Book Club The East Bay Book Club is a very dynamic group of individuals who share one thing in common: an enthusiasm for books. Each month, members read a particular book, chosen by the whole group or by the Organizer, and meet to share observations, insights, and personal thoughts about it. Meetings are devoted to various genres, both contemporary and classic. Although the club is based in Berkeley, CA, book readers from any geographical area are welcome to join. The club's …

The East Bay Documentary Filmmaking Support Group (analogous to a writing group) consists of a select group of East Bay documentary filmmakers that meet once or twice a month to review, discuss, and provide critical feedback of members' works-in-progress. The documentaries can be in any phase of the production (conceptualization, brainstorms, reviews of treatments, research, scripts, proposals, assemblies, rough cuts, fine cuts etc). This diverse group meets in the city of San Francisco about once a month. We welcome suggestions and encourage voting about what types of books to read and what types of venues to drink in. (If you decide to join, please check out the polls and vote!) (Polls can be found under the "More" tab at the top, just below our Group Name.) We are very informal, meaning you are encouraged to come to a meetup even if you haven't finished the book, or haven't started it! It's Booze first and Books second, s …
This group is for "Coloured" folks in the East Bay/Oakland area who want to read the works of this American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic James Baldwin. We gather together once a month and discuss what we read. For such a long time I, Sharon, have had a fascination with the work of this amazing writer, his vision and the clarity of expressing that vision. Join us in a reading/discussion group exploring one of the major American voices of the 20th century. We will work …
